Minimum Requirements
I am a Information Technology person. That is what I do for a living and those are supposedly the people I work for. There are a couple of things that I have learned from a mixture of my Management days and to my switch to the Information technology world.
One of the these things is you need the right tools for the job. When I was an Aircraft Mechanic I had a huge tool box that I would wheel out to the Plane I was working on that day. Although we had a joke that everything could be fixed with a screwdriver and a hammer. That was a joke, you didn’t see me out there changing a jet engine without the right torque wrenches.
This leads me to the situation I am at right now… I have a system that I have to set up that will scan the whole Network for any vulnerabilities that may exist. Well this leads to a lot of issue, mainly that if I find stuff that means someone hasn’t been doing their job. Well that person that usually gets slammed is my supervisor. So the other day when I told my supervisor that the software I am using just went to a new version and the minimum requirement has been raised. I gave him the specs and a purchase order for a new server. Of course the Minimum Requirements are spot on what the server I am using now has. What I have learned in my short IT career is that the Minimum requirements are the BARE MINIMUM… This system lets me pull up my reports with great detail. I have the scan running at night and the next morning I start compiling the information so I can make a report. It takes longer for the system to compile the report than it did for the scan. I was an hour late for my report the other day. Yes that was a butt chewing. I was watching the system Performance the whole time it was trying to compile the report and sure enough the Processor was at 100% for 4 hours.
But that does not get me a new server for my needs because the company that makes this software says my server meets the system requirements.
If you manage an IT Shop and do not want to keep up with technology do everyone that works for you a favor… RETIRE… I still hear everyday, “Well we never had these problems with a Mainframe.”
